The 3-body problem VS an "uncomfortable" book
In recent months the TV series "The 3 Body Problem" has been quite discussed for its particular vision of what surrounds us.
Did you notice the title of the book that "Young Ye Wenjie" (an astrophysics prodigy who feels alone in the universe after losing everything during the Chinese Cultural Revolution) was arrested after reading it? Do you know him? Have you wondered why it was deemed illegal and prohibited by the Chinese government?
Well, it is a really existing book, which has been capable of significantly upsetting and changing the habits of modern man.
But what is the title and the concrete topic that this book deals with?
Silent Spring, released in 1962, written by Rachel Carson and environmentalists who published scientific research and analyzes showing all the damage that DDT and pesticides (an element combined with water to preserve plants) were doing in those years on human health and animal globally [1].
Silent Spring
Excerpt from the book
"People born before 1942 have no traces of toxic substances in their bodies. By 1954 people contained an average of 5.3 to 7.4 ppm. Researchers from the United States Public Health Service concluded through research that DDT It is present in most, if not all, of our foods. Most people who have not been exposed to intense DDT exposure have accumulated the toxicant in their fatty tissues through food." [2]
This book immediately captures attention and reveals the severity of the environmental crisis that was emerging.
Carson paints an eerie picture: a normally vibrant spring, full of birdsong and the sounds of life, transformed into a time of eerie silence due to the use of DDT. This powerful pesticide, initially used to combat elm graphosis (it is a disease caused by an ascomycete fungus that affects this tree. The causal agent is the fungus Ophiostoma ulmi, whose spread is facilitated by a beetle that carries out part of its life cycle in the bark of elm trees. The fungus blocks the vessels that conduct sap to the leaves, inhibiting the transport of water and causing yellowing of the leaves with subsequent death of parts of branches, branches or the entire plant.), has had devastating effects. Applied to trees, DDT kills insects, but when the leaves fall and decompose, the poison enters the food chain. The worms ingest the DDT and, in the spring, the birds that feed on it die or become sterile, leaving the world shrouded in eerie silence [3].
Carson discovers that the problem is even broader: contaminated leaves end up in rivers and lakes, also poisoning fish. It's only a matter of time before DDT works its way up the food chain to humans. He proposes renaming pesticides “biocides”, since they not only kill harmful species, but all living things [4].
Although scientists were aware of the dangers of pesticides, they continued to be distributed for economic reasons. DDT, produced in large quantities during the Second World War to protect American soldiers from lice and to fight mosquitoes, had to find new markets after the war. The chemical companies, according to Carson, deliberately deceived consumers to continue selling the product [5].
Rachel Carson, with her relentless accusation against the chemical industry and her fervent defense of the environment, invites us to reflect deeply on our choices and the devastating impact they can have on nature.
Silent Spring highlighted for the first time that environmental distress and ongoing human cancer diseases were directly caused by the use of certain substances contained in DDTs consistently used on our crops to fight insects.
This created awareness in man, who through the publication of this book decided to close and make the use of certain substances illegal [6] [7] [8].
This does not mean that current DDTs do not create problems for us and the environment, on the contrary, there are still many harmful substances in circulation but it was a first start in which scientific data demonstrated the correlation between the increase in diseases and the use of massive amount of pesticides [6] [7] [8].
By establishing in the human soul an awareness of self-destruction.
